How to Build a Floating Frame for Canvas Art

In this video, I’m building a DIY floating canvas frame for a beautiful piece of artwork by Carmen Carpenter. The canvas arrived unframed, and while it looked great on its own, I wanted to give it a more finished, gallery-style look while adding a little extra protection.

I’ll walk through the full process, from choosing a more budget-friendly hardwood, cutting the miters, gluing up the frame, reinforcing the corners with splines, staining the frame, mounting the canvas with brackets, and adding hanging hardware. This is a great woodworking project if you want to elevate your canvas art without paying for custom framing.

The biggest tip? Go slow when attaching anything near the canvas. The frame can be fixed. The art cannot.
